The Mission is a British movie film from 1986 written by Robert Bolt and directed by Roland Joffé.

Starring Robert De Niro, Liam Neeson,Aidan Quinn, Jeremy Irons.

It tells about the experiences of a Jesuit missionary in 18th century South America. The whole film was shot in the region of the Iguazu Falls : one can see the falls, the jungle, the old missionary buildings, the indegenous indian tribes, etc.

The film has won several prices : the Academy Award for Best Cinematography and the Palme d’Or (Golden Palm).
It was chosen as the number one of the Top 50 Religious Films (2007).
The music was composed by the famous Italian Ennio Morricone.

The legend of the Iguacu Falls

Their name comes from the Guarani or Tupi words y (water) and ûasú (large). According to a legend, a god who had foreseen a beautiful aborigine named Naipí to marry who fled with her mortal lover Tarobá in a canoe. In rage, the god sliced theriver through the middle of the falls which were made and the lovers condemned to eternal waterfall.
